About us

The Saxony Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired e. V. (BSVS) is a non-profit organization for self-help, solidarity and representation of the interests of people who are affected or threatened by blindness or visual impairment and their relatives.

Our district organization has around 130 members in Chemnitz and the former district of Stollberg.

Representation of interests

Our district organization advocates for the interests of blind and visually impaired people in Chemnitz and the surrounding area in a variety of ways. We are represented on the Disability Advisory Council of the city of Chemnitz and work closely with authorities, institutions and other organizations to improve the quality of life of those affected.

<ü>We focus on improving accessibility in local public transport and in public spaces. Our aim is to ensure that means of transportation, streets and public spaces are designed in such a way that they are accessible to blind and visually impaired people.

Another focus of our work is to promote the accessibility of cultural events, educational institutions, museums, exhibitions and health and care facilities. Blind and visually impaired people should have the same opportunities to participate in cultural and educational activities as everyone else.

We champion the interests of blind and visually impaired people in Chemnitz in a variety of ways. For example, we are represented on Chemnitz's Disability Advisory Council and work in various committees to improve local public transport and the accessibility of public spaces. We are actively involved in implementing the City of Chemnitz's action plan to improve the participation of people with disabilities. We have been intensively involved in the development of the Chemnitz action plan and are committed to improving the participation of disabled people in all areas of social life. A particular focus is on participation in the labor market.

Self-help

Tandem group

In order to give blind and visually impaired people the opportunity to cycle, our district organization has had a tandem group since 2010. This is not possible without the many sighted pilots. Whether you are sighted, blind or visually impaired, join us. Experience sporting activity together, the beautiful surrounding air and the feeling of community on two wheels. Our tours lead through Chemnitz and the surrounding area, are approx. 30 km long and offer space for exchange and new friendships. Please contact us at tandem@bsv-chemnitz.de or at our office. We look forward to seeing you!

Chatting hours

Once a month on Thursdays at 2 p.m., interested people meet for coffee and cake and invite guests to find out interesting things. Whether it's about hobbies, work, aids, support services, travel, social law, life in other countries, health ... There is always a lot of new information to hear and often also to feel or experience. The exchange in a relaxed atmosphere not only offers exciting insights, but also the opportunity to ask questions and make valuable contacts. If you would like to take part in our chat session or have something interesting to tell us yourself, please contact our office.

Smartphone get-together

Our smartphone get-together takes place every two months. It gives you the opportunity to try things out, ask questions and share experiences. How do you use the touchscreen as a blind person? What's new? Which functions and apps are necessary in everyday life? What do you need to consider when buying a smartphone?

In a relaxed atmosphere, beginners and experienced users help each other to discover new functions and overcome individual challenges. The focus is on topics such as accessibility settings, screen reader use and helpful apps for navigation, communication and organization.

Bring your own device or test a device on site.

If you are interested, please contact kweser@bsv-chemnitz.de or our office.

Showdown

We have been playing showdown - a sport that is often compared to table tennis and airhockey, but in which you shoot at goals with bats on the table - since 2015. Blind, visually impaired and sighted people can all play this game, as the ball is localized by sound. To ensure the game is fair, everyone wears dark masks. We have two groups: One plays on Mondays, the other on Thursdays.

Both groups meet at the environmental center in Henriettenstraße on Kaßberg. Showdown not only promotes reaction skills and coordination, but also provides a lot of fun and sporting ambition. Our training sessions take place in a relaxed atmosphere and offer both beginners and advanced players the opportunity to improve their skills. If you would like to come and watch, play or help us run the events, please contact us by e-mail at tischball@bsv-chemnitz.de or at our office. Spectators and interested parties are also welcome at any time!

Hikes and excursions

Our district organization regularly goes on hiking excursions to various parts of Saxony. These excursions offer a great opportunity to discover new places and socialize.

Once a year, we go on a challenging hike in Saxon Switzerland. Guides are always needed to support the participants and lead them safely through nature.

Whether you are sighted, blind or visually impaired - everyone is welcome! If you would like to join us, please contact our office. No previous knowledge is required, just the joy of shared experiences.

Ninepins Bowling

Our ninepins bowling group meets once a month at the ESKA ninepins bowling alley on Reichenhainer Straße. We not only have fun bowling in a relaxed atmosphere, but also take the opportunity to exchange ideas and have a good time together. If you would like to support our bowling group or simply join us, please contact our office. We are happy about every new bowler and every helping hand!

Dancing

Twice a year we dance circle dances of European peoples together with sighted people. New dancers are always needed. If you would like to be informed about our next dance event, regardless of whether you are blind, visually impaired or sighted, please contact our office. We look forward to every participation and to experiencing the variety of European dances together in a cheerful atmosphere.

Braille courses

Once a year, in November, we offer an introduction to Braille for everyone at the Chemnitz Adult Education Center. You can learn full braille there. You will also learn many interesting facts about the writing of blind people, its history and possible applications in everyday life. This event offers the opportunity to gain a practical insight into writing and reading with Braille. If you are interested, please register directly with the Chemnitz Adult Education Center.

If you are blind and would like to learn more about braille, you can also contact our office. We will then help you further.
